Residents in Sandusky will get an update Wednesday evening, October 21, on the Sandusky Bay Pathway and on a planned study of a longer link between Sandusky and Port Clinton. A forum on the pathway is set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Castaway Bay in Sandusky, hosted by the Greater Sandusky Partnership.

The forum will feature community leaders discussing details of the project, according to a report on October 20. Along with the existing pathway work in Sandusky, the discussion will cover a one-year study of a 14-mile pathway between Sandusky and Port Clinton that will evaluate possible routes, engineering considerations and costs.

The City of Sandusky describes the Sandusky Bay Pathway as a multi-use trail connecting the city’s neighborhoods, parks and waterfront, creating continuous public access along the bay. That local section is the part of the shoreline residents already use to walk and ride near the water, marinas and downtown.

The longer Sandusky-to-Port Clinton idea would extend that kind of connection west along Sandusky Bay into Ottawa County. Past planning coverage has described the pathway as part of a much larger vision to connect communities around the greater Sandusky Bay region, with about 20 miles completed or funded in earlier phases. The new study is meant to test whether the 14-mile link can work in practice, and what it would take to build it.

That is why the study questions matter for people who live along the bay. A route has to work for walkers and riders, fit the shoreline and roads it follows, and deal with engineering questions where the trail meets water, bridges and developed areas. Cost is the other major question the one-year study is expected to examine before any construction decision could be made.

For Sandusky, a completed connection to Port Clinton would tie two Lake Erie shore communities together without a car trip for users of the trail, linking waterfronts, parks and businesses in Erie and Ottawa counties. For now, officials are still in the planning stage, and the forum is a chance for residents to hear how the study will be carried out and what details leaders are looking at first.

The forum runs for two hours Wednesday evening at Castaway Bay. Residents who use the current pathway, live along a possible route, or follow waterfront planning in Sandusky and Port Clinton can hear the update there and follow the study as route, engineering and cost work continues over the coming year.
