Marietta College junior defensive back Jonah Asebrook has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday, November 2 — an honor earned with a 12-tackle performance and a fourth-quarter pick-six that sealed the Pioneers’ 24-13 upset of No. 24-ranked Heidelberg, Marietta College Athletics reported.
It is the first OAC weekly award of Asebrook’s career, and it makes him the third different Pioneer to claim the defensive honor this season, according to Marietta College Athletics — a sign of how much of Marietta’s success this fall has been built on its defense rather than any single star.
The game itself turned on that defense. Heidelberg arrived in the national rankings with a rushing attack to match, and Marietta held the Student Princes to 70 rushing yards on 35 carries — exactly 2.0 yards per attempt — according to Marietta College Athletics. A ranked opponent that cannot run the ball has to throw it, and throwing it is what put the ball in Asebrook’s hands at the decisive moment.
That moment came in the fourth quarter. With the upset still in reach for Heidelberg, Asebrook intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown, sealing the 24-13 victory, Marietta College Athletics reported. A pick-six is the single most valuable play a defense can produce — it ends an opponent’s drive and puts points on the board in the same snap — and it landed on top of a team-high 12 tackles, nine of them solo.
Asebrook’s season numbers explain why the league’s coaches and voters were already watching him. He ranks seventh in the Ohio Athletic Conference at 7.6 tackles per game and fourth in the conference with seven pass breakups, according to Marietta College Athletics — production that marks him as both a sure tackler in run support and a genuine coverage defender, the two halves of a modern defensive back’s job.
The combination is rarer than either number alone. Defensive backs who rank among a conference’s tackle leaders are usually playing close to the line against the run; backs who rank among its pass-breakup leaders are usually playing in coverage downfield. Asebrook appears in the top tier of both lists, which is why his coaches can use him in either role — and why Heidelberg’s offense kept running into him in both phases on Saturday.
He comes to Marietta from southeast Ohio’s own backyard in the wider region: Asebrook is from South Charleston, Ohio, and played at Southeastern High School before joining the Pioneers, Marietta College Athletics noted in its announcement. For a Division III program, a junior from an Ohio high school developing into one of the conference’s most productive defensive backs is exactly the recruiting story the staff hopes to repeat.
What we know — and what we’re still waiting on
What is settled: the award, the stat line, and the result — a 24-13 home upset of a nationally ranked conference opponent, with the clinching score produced by the defense. What remains open is the finish. Marietta has one home game left, and whether the Pioneers can carry the Heidelberg performance into it will say a lot about whether this was a single big afternoon or the defense’s true level.
The Pioneers’ program has been part of the Marietta fall fabric for generations — game days at Don Drumm Stadium are among the anchors of the Washington County sports calendar, in a region that this fall has also been tracking southeast Ohio’s deer-herd recovery ahead of gun season and small-city decisions like Nelsonville’s new water-customer deposit in neighboring Athens County.
What happens next is the home finale. Marietta returns home Saturday, November 7, to face Wilmington College, and the program will honor all of its seniors in a pre-game ceremony before the 1:30 p.m. kickoff, according to Marietta College Athletics. For Asebrook, a junior, the finale is a chance to add to a season that now includes conference player-of-the-week honors — and to send the seniors out with one more defensive performance like the one that beat Heidelberg.
