A woman died early Sunday after a wrong-way crash on the Himrod Avenue Expressway in Youngstown, according to Youngstown police as reported by WKBN. Police said the crash happened about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, on the expressway near the Williamson Avenue exit.
Police believe the woman who died was the wrong-way driver, WKBN reported. Her name and age have not been released; WKBN reported that the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the person who died.
Two other people were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with injuries that police described as non-life-threatening, according to the WKBN report. No vehicle descriptions were released in the police account reported Monday morning, and police have not said whether anyone else was in the woman’s vehicle.
21 WFMJ, which reported on the crash Sunday, described a two-car collision in the westbound lanes of the expressway. Firefighters extracted passengers from a car that was trapped against the barrier, traffic backed up in the area while crews worked, and the roadway reopened later Sunday morning, according to WFMJ’s reporting.
What we know — and what we’re still waiting on: Police have confirmed the time and place of the crash, that they believe the woman who died was driving the wrong way, and that two other people were hurt but are expected to survive. Still unanswered: the woman’s identity, why her vehicle was traveling the wrong way, the types of vehicles involved, and whether impairment, speed, or another factor played a role. Police have announced no charges in the reports available Monday morning.
Youngstown police are investigating the crash. The next information expected is the coroner’s identification of the woman who died, followed by any further findings police release about how the wrong-way collision happened. WKBN said it will update its reporting as more information is provided.
