Muskingum University defended its home court in New Concord on Saturday morning, sweeping Marietta College 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-20) in Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball action.
The win lifted the Muskies to 17-6 overall and 3-3 in the OAC, while the Pioneers fell to 15-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play. It was a morning of momentum swings, but every time Marietta threatened, Muskingum found the run that closed the door.
Marietta actually started the match on the front foot, racing to a 5-1 lead in the opening set behind a kill from McKenzie Heil, a service ace from Keatyn Haynes and consecutive points from Karly Launder. The Pioneers still led 7-2 after a Muskingum attack error before the match turned: the Muskies scored seven straight points to flip a five-point deficit into a 9-7 lead and never gave the set back.
Marietta kept the first set within reach at 12-10 on an Emily Piehler kill and again at 16-15 after a Launder kill and a Jayden Austermiller ace, but that was as close as the Pioneers would get. Muskingum closed the opener on a dominant 9-1 stretch to take it 25-16 and set the tone for the sweep.
The second set was the match’s turning point. Marietta pushed the hosts to the edge before Muskingum escaped 26-24, the only set of the morning decided by the minimum margin. Taking that set gave the Muskies a 2-0 cushion and denied the Pioneers the foothold they needed to extend the match.
Muskingum finished the job in the third, winning 25-20 to complete the sweep and protect its home floor in the rivalry meeting between the two Muskingum County and Washington County programs separated by roughly 40 miles of southeast Ohio highway.
For Marietta, the loss snapped the momentum of a strong conference start — the Pioneers entered the day 4-1 in the OAC — and came on a busy Saturday for the college, whose football and soccer teams were also in action against Muskingum. The volleyball Pioneers will look to regroup as the OAC schedule turns toward its final weeks and the conference tournament race tightens.
Muskingum, meanwhile, evened its conference record at 3-3 with the kind of balanced home performance that keeps a team in the OAC’s crowded middle tier within striking distance of a tournament berth.
