Montgomery County is urging residents to sign up for Regroup Alerts, the county’s free emergency notification system, which delivers warnings about severe weather, evacuations, boil advisories, shelter-in-place emergencies and other public safety information directly to phones and inboxes.
Registration is free and takes only a few minutes. Residents can sign up on the Montgomery County website or simply text “Join” to 58339 to begin receiving alerts. Subscribers choose how they want to be reached — by text message, phone call, email, or a combination — rather than relying on a single channel during an emergency.
The system lets each subscriber register the locations that matter most to them, including home, work, school or other important places. That matters in a county like Montgomery, where a resident might live in one community, work in Dayton and have children in school in a third — an alert tied to only one address can miss the places a family actually spends its day.
County emergency officials pitch the system with a simple line: stay connected, stay prepared, stay safe. Emergencies can happen anytime, and the alerts are designed to reach residents with timely, location-specific information — a tornado warning for their neighborhood, a boil advisory for their water system, or an evacuation or shelter-in-place order for their street — instead of a countywide blast that may not apply to them.
The push for sign-ups comes as the Dayton region heads into late fall, when the alert system’s range — severe weather, boil advisories and public safety emergencies among them — covers the disruptions most likely to hit Montgomery County households before winter weather season arrives in earnest.
Signing up is voluntary, and the county stresses that registration is quick and easy. Residents who have never enrolled, or who have changed phone numbers or moved within the county, are the ones officials most want to reach: an alert account tied to an old number or a former address delivers its warning to the wrong place.
Montgomery County residents can enroll through the Regroup Alerts page on the county’s official website, mcohio.org, or by texting “Join” to 58339. County officials recommend that every adult in a household register separately, so a warning reaches the whole family and not just one phone.
