Michigan has flipped wide receiver Yuto Kawamura-Johnson from his commitment to Toledo, according to an October 20 report from On3. Kawamura-Johnson, a senior at West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Florida, visited Michigan over the weekend, received an offer from the Wolverines and switched his commitment on Tuesday morning, dealing the Rockets a late loss in the recruiting cycle.

Kawamura-Johnson is a three-star receiver listed at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds. Through his first six games this season, he caught 24 passes for 575 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 24 yards per reception, production that drew a late push from several larger programs after he had initially chosen Toledo.

Michigan identified him as a priority prospect last week and moved quickly. Wide receivers coach Micah Simon is his primary recruiter for the Wolverines, and general manager Dave Peloquin visited his school last week before the program brought Kawamura-Johnson and his family to campus for the weekend visit that preceded the flip.

He also held early offers from Kentucky and Louisville, according to the report, and Michigan State, South Florida and West Virginia were among the other programs trying to flip him from Toledo. That competition underlines why the loss stings for the Rockets: they had held a commitment that multiple Power Four programs were actively working to break.

For Toledo, the flip is a reminder of the challenge Mid-American Conference programs face holding commitments once a Big Ten school offers late. The Rockets will need to turn to other receiver targets in the class to replace the speed and production Kawamura-Johnson was expected to bring to the Glass Bowl.

The report did not include a statement from Kawamura-Johnson beyond the account of his visit and decision, and Toledo does not comment on recruits who have not signed. His recruitment is now closed to Michigan, while the Rockets’ staff moves on with the remaining months before the signing period.

Northwest Ohio fans will still see the region’s recruiting battles continue through the fall, but this one is decided: a Toledo commitment is headed to Ann Arbor instead, after a weekend visit turned an offer into a flip in a matter of days.
