Election night in Lorain County is winding toward a familiar conclusion in the U.S. Senate race: with 187 of the county’s 210 precincts reporting, Democrat Sherrod Brown led Republican incumbent Jon Husted 64,244 votes to 47,668 in the Associated Press tabulation of the county’s unofficial returns, with Libertarian William Redpath at 3,135 and independent Greg Levy at 2,148.
The county’s polls closed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, after a full day of voting in Elyria, Lorain, Avon Lake, Oberlin and the county’s townships. The Lorain County Board of Elections posted unofficial results through the evening as precincts delivered their tallies, and the remaining precincts were expected to complete the unofficial count overnight.
Lorain County voters also decided a contested race for county commissioner, where incumbent Republican Jeff Riddell faced Democrat Carolyn Y. White and independent Andrew Lipian, according to the board of elections’ certified candidate list. Riddell, first elected in 2022, narrowly won renomination in the May Republican primary, the Chronicle-Telegram reported.
The county auditor’s race paired incumbent Democratic Auditor Craig Snodgrass, a CPA, against Republican challenger Elaine Seguin, a CPA who serves as president of the Elyria City School Board. Countywide, voters also weighed an additional 0.85-mill levy for the Lorain County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Murray Ridge Center, which the ballot language estimated would collect about $10 million a year for facilities, programs and services.
In Elyria, the school district’s 8.9-mill operating levy was on the ballot at a transitional moment for the district: Superintendent Ann Schloss is retiring in December after eight years leading the district, and the board has begun a superintendent search, the Morning Journal reported. District leaders framed the levy vote as setting the fiscal baseline the next superintendent will inherit.
Lorain County’s choices in the statewide races mirrored its Senate leanings in the early count, while the governor’s race between Democrat Amy Acton and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy remained too early to call statewide late Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
What happens next: every number reported Tuesday night is unofficial. The board of elections will count eligible outstanding absentee and provisional ballots, then conduct the official canvass before certifying the county’s results later this month, which is when the commissioner, auditor and levy outcomes become final.
