LeBron James will play in Cleveland on Friday night in the uniform of the visiting team that employs him now — the Philadelphia 76ers — when the Cavaliers host Philadelphia in an Emirates NBA Cup game at Rocket Arena, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, and it will be James’s first game in the building as a member of the 76ers.

The matchup pairs one of the league’s hottest starts with a Cavaliers team still finding its footing. Philadelphia arrives at 8-1 overall and 4-0 on the road, according to the Akron Beacon Journal, while Cleveland is 4-4 but 3-1 at home. The game streams on Amazon Prime Video, with radio coverage on WMMS (100.7-FM) and WTAM (1100-AM), according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

James is not the only familiar face coming back. Forward Dean Wade, who spent the first seven seasons of his career in Cleveland and had been the longest-tenured Cavalier, will face the Cavs for the first time since agreeing to a four-year, $38 million contract with the 76ers on June 30, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Wade started 160 of his 342 regular-season games with Cleveland, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

Wade told the Akron Beacon Journal that returning as a visitor felt strange from the moment he walked in for shootaround on Friday, and that he knows what awaits James because he watched it for seven years from the home bench. “In my seven years, anytime LeBron came back, it was just a madhouse. It was crazy,” Wade told the Akron Beacon Journal. “The fans were awesome. So, I expect that to be what tonight’s going to be like — super loud, a lot of energy. I think it’s going to be a fun night.”

James’s move to Philadelphia was the stunner of the NBA summer. He announced on July 24 that he would sign with the 76ers, making Philadelphia the fourth franchise of his career alongside the Cavaliers, the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. The Akron Beacon Journal reported that James chose the 76ers over his other top suitors — the Cavaliers, the Heat, the Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves — so Cleveland’s front office made a real run at a reunion before James picked Philadelphia.

Why Friday matters starts with what James means here. The Akron native and St. Vincent-St. Mary graduate was drafted by the Cavaliers in 2003, left for Miami, came home, and in 2016 led the Cavs to the NBA championship, ending a nearly 52-year title drought among Cleveland’s major professional sports teams, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. The emotion of these returns is real: when James visited with the Lakers last season, he appeared to shed tears during a first-quarter tribute video, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Wade, now his teammate, told the Akron Beacon Journal that James’s basketball IQ is “otherworldly” and that his passing and court vision “don’t even feel real.”

There is also a tournament on the line. The game is part of East Group B in NBA Cup play, a group that also includes the Miami Heat, the Indiana Pacers and the reigning champion New York Knicks, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Philadelphia is already 1-0 in Cup play after beating the Knicks on Oct. 30, and Miami is also 1-0, the Akron Beacon Journal reported. Friday is Cleveland’s first NBA Cup game of the 2026-27 season, played on a custom-designed, fully painted Cup court.

The teams have already met once, in Cleveland’s opener — and it still stings. On Oct. 22 in Philadelphia, Wade sat out with an ankle injury while Cleveland squandered a 29-point lead and lost 114-106, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Friday gives the Cavaliers a chance to answer that collapse at home, with Wade actually in uniform this time. Wade has played seven games for Philadelphia, averaging 4.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.9 steals, according to the Akron Beacon Journal, and he started 14 of Cleveland’s 18 playoff games last spring, when the Cavs reached the Eastern Conference Finals without James for the first time since 1992.

Cleveland also made a roster move ahead of the game, signing forward Norchad Omier to a two-way contract and waiving forward Riley Minix, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Omier averaged 18.3 points and 11.5 rebounds in the NBA G League last season, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

What we know — and what we’re still waiting on

What is confirmed: James and Wade both return to Rocket Arena as 76ers, Philadelphia is unbeaten on the road, and the game counts in the East Group B standings, where a Cleveland loss would leave the Cavs chasing both the 76ers and the Heat. What is still unknown is how the crowd splits its heart — the building has cheered James as a returning hero before, but never with a Cup game and an early-season statement on the line against him.

What happens next is immediate: the ball goes up at 7:30 p.m. ET Friday at Rocket Arena on Amazon Prime Video, and by late Friday night Cleveland will know whether its first NBA Cup game of the season was a celebration, a spoiler, or the start of an uphill climb in Group B. Either way, for one night, the most famous return in Cleveland sports is the only story in town.
