U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth visited Dayton on Tuesday, October 20, delivering remarks to workers at Sierra Nevada Corporation, an aircraft maintenance company, alongside Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink. The stop was part of the Department of War’s Arsenal of Freedom tour, which officials have described as a call to action to revitalize America’s manufacturing might and re-energize the nation’s workforce, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The Dayton visit came three days after President Donald Trump held a midterm rally in Northern Kentucky, and in the middle of a string of visits by Trump administration officials to Greater Cincinnati and southwest Ohio ahead of the midterm elections. Hegseth was also expected to visit Eau Claire, Wisconsin, with Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler as the tour continued.

Southwest Ohio’s defense and aerospace workforce is the backdrop for the stop. Sierra Nevada’s Dayton-area operation does aircraft maintenance work, and the region around Wright-Patterson Air Force Base supports thousands of defense jobs, making the Miami Valley a natural setting for a tour aimed at manufacturing and defense-industrial workers.

The administration is working to strengthen Republican support among Ohio voters in a year with key races for governor and a U.S. Senate seat on the November 3 ballot. Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to appear at a rally at the Sharonville Convention Center on October 21, keeping the region at the center of the closing campaign schedule.

Democrats are bringing their own national figures to Ohio in the same stretch. Former President Barack Obama is expected to stump for Democrats at an October 24 rally in Cleveland alongside gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton and former Senator Sherrod Brown, setting up back-to-back weeks of national attention on the state’s races.

For Dayton workers, the immediate news was the visit itself: two senior defense officials speaking directly to an aircraft maintenance workforce about manufacturing and the defense industrial base, in a city whose economy is closely tied to both. The Enquirer report did not detail specific new contracts or hiring announcements tied to the stop.

Early voting for the November 3 election is already under way across Ohio, running this week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at county boards of elections. The Hegseth visit, the Vance rally and the Obama rally all land inside that early-voting window, as both parties make their final pitches to Ohio voters before Election Day.
