Gibsonburg made its home field count Friday night. The Golden Bears defeated Toledo Christian 37-8 in a Division VII, Region 26 first-round playoff game, advancing in the Ohio High School Athletic Association postseason in a final score reported on the statewide scoreboards published by the Mansfield News Journal and the Zanesville Times Recorder.

Both teams entered the night at 5-5, with No. 7 seed Gibsonburg hosting No. 10 seed Toledo Christian in one of the few first-round matchups between two Northwest Ohio programs. The Golden Bears turned that even-on-paper pairing into a comfortable win, outscoring the Eagles by 29 points.

The result moves Gibsonburg to 6-5 on the season and into the regional quarterfinal round. Toledo Christian’s season ends at 5-6 after the road loss in Sandusky County.

Gibsonburg’s win was part of a busy Region 26 first round across Northwest Ohio. According to the Mansfield News Journal’s statewide scoreboard, Edon defeated Jefferson 41-14, Pandora-Gilboa shut out Montpelier 45-0 and Mohawk handled Wayne Trace 42-13 in the same region Friday night.

The Golden Bears had closed the regular season with momentum in the Sandusky Bay Conference’s River Division, including a win over Margaretta in Week 9 before a loss to unbeaten Woodmore in the regular-season finale. Friday’s playoff win gives Gibsonburg its first postseason victory of this tournament and keeps its November run alive for at least one more week.

For Toledo Christian, the loss wraps up a season that saw the Eagles reach the playoffs out of the Toledo Area Athletic Conference and earn the trip to Gibsonburg as the region’s No. 10 seed.
