CINCINNATI — Forty-four people were arrested across Cincinnati over the Halloween weekend, and two police officers were assaulted, in a string of violent crimes, crowd disturbances and firearm incidents that the Cincinnati Police Department detailed in a release Monday evening, Nov. 2, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
One officer was taken to a hospital for injuries and another was treated at the scene in the Corryville area, where a large crowd erupted on Halloween night, police said in the release, as reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer. Police confirmed two people have been arrested in connection with the assaults on the officers.
Most of the events unfolded within about two hours, from late on Oct. 31 into the early morning of Nov. 1, according to police. Officers took one person into custody after a large fight in the 2800 block of Short Vine Street at about 11:50 p.m.; that person was charged with obstructing official business, the release states, as reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Just after midnight, officers heard gunshots outside a nightclub on East 7th Street and went inside Memories Lounge, where they found Kameiro Blair-Martin suffering from critical injuries, police said. He was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he died, according to the police release reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
In the Uptown area, an officer witnessed an assault on Vine Street and police used chemical irritants to stop the attack; the person attacked was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening and the attackers fled, police said. Minutes later, another person was taken into custody near West Corry Street on charges of resisting arrest and carrying a concealed weapon, according to the release.
The two officers were attacked at about 1:27 a.m. while detaining someone in a disorderly crowd near Jefferson Avenue, and minutes after that, officers arrested several people while dispersing a crowd of about 2,000 people near West Corry Street, police said. In Corryville overall, 11 people were arrested, according to the release reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer. Officers also investigated a separate stabbing and a separate shooting, in each of which one person was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said he was appalled by the reported assaults of the two officers in a statement Nov. 2. "Violence against law enforcement is unacceptable, and those responsible must be held accountable," Wilson said in the statement, as reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer. What happens next: the investigations into the East 7th Street death and the weekend’s other incidents are ongoing, and police have not announced any additional arrests.
