The Cleveland Cavaliers open their 2026-27 regular season on Thursday night, visiting the Philadelphia 76ers at 7 p.m. at Xfinity Mobile Arena in a matchup that puts Cleveland against an upgraded Eastern Conference rival on opening night.

The opponent adds a familiar storyline. LeBron James, the Akron native who led Cleveland to the 2016 NBA title, chose the 76ers in free agency in July over his other top suitors, which included the Cavaliers, Miami, Golden State and Minnesota, according to the Akron Beacon Journal’s season preview.

Cleveland begins the year coming off a conference finals appearance in May, and the organization has said plainly that it believes a run to the NBA Finals is realistic. Head coach Kenny Atkinson and others in the organization have put that goal on the record heading into the opener.

Center Jarrett Allen summed up the mood in the locker room on Tuesday. “Can’t run from anything now,” Allen said. “This is our time to go and show what we’re made of. It’s now or never.”

Outside expectations have not all matched Cleveland’s own view. Several other Eastern Conference teams have been rated as more viable contenders by many observers despite the Cavaliers’ conference finals run, a slight the Beacon Journal noted has only grown the chip on the franchise’s shoulder.

Thursday’s game is a first test rather than a verdict. An opening-night road game against a direct conference rival gives Cleveland an early chance to measure its rotation, its defense and its late-game execution against the kind of opponent it would expect to see again in the spring.

Opening night also starts the Cavaliers’ work of answering the questions that followed them out of last season: whether their core can stay healthy across a full schedule, and whether the lessons of a deep playoff run translate into a faster start in a crowded Eastern Conference race.

The Cavaliers’ season continues after Thursday with the long regular-season schedule ahead. For fans in Northeast Ohio, the opener offers the first real look at whether this group can turn last spring’s conference finals appearance into the Finals run the team says it expects from itself.
