A Canton man who was shot by police in Michigan was indicted Oct. 28 in connection with robberies in Cleveland and Toledo, according to reporting by The Repository (CantonRep.com). Cizquindrie Smith, 38, faces federal charges of commerce by threats or violence and bank robbery, The Repository reported.
Smith also faces charges in Michigan after being accused of ramming a box truck into a Taylor, Michigan, police vehicle and pointing a gun at officers, The Repository reported. He has been detained in Wayne County Jail in Michigan on a $75,000 bond since July 9, according to The Repository.
According to an FBI agent’s investigation described in court records and reported by The Repository, Smith is connected to two armed robberies and is accused of taking over $1,500. Court records show that on June 30, a Family Dollar on Clark Avenue in Cleveland was robbed by a person showing a pistol, and the suspect made a cashier put $200 in cash into a pink bag, The Repository reported.
A few days later, on July 2, a Citizens Bank on Lewis Avenue in Toledo was robbed by a man with a dark-colored pistol, according to court records reported by The Repository. A silent alarm was activated at 9:57 a.m., the suspect fired one round and instructed the teller to put money into a black backpack, and the bank manager estimated he took $1,341, The Repository reported.
Toledo police at the scene found one spent 9mm shell casing, a projectile lodged in the bank teller wall and two fragments, The Repository reported, citing the court records. A license plate reader found the same truck going northbound on Lewis Avenue at State Line Road in Monroe County, Michigan, at 10:01 a.m. that day, according to The Repository’s reporting of the records.
The same week, on July 6, Taylor police found the vehicle at a Sheetz gas station in Taylor, and Smith allegedly tried to flee, backed into a police vehicle and pointed a gun at officers, leading to an officer-involved shooting and his arrest, The Repository reported. In Michigan he is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, fleeing and eluding, felonious assault, resisting police and firearm counts, according to The Repository.
Smith will be arraigned on Nov. 16 before Magistrate Judge Darrell A. Clay, The Repository reported. The U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to comment to The Repository, which also reported it left a message for Smith’s listed attorney, Donna Grill, seeking comment.
An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction, and Smith is presumed innocent of the federal charges unless proven guilty in court. NewsForce247 is crediting The Repository for the court-record details in this story, which come from its reporting on the indictment.
