Nestlé will close its packaging facility in Solon and move that production to a plant in Gaffney, South Carolina, according to reporting by Manufacturing.net, which cited Cleveland.com. The Solon facility makes flexible pouches used by Nestlé’s Professional Solutions business for the foodservice industry.

Manufacturing.net reported that the company plans to wind down the Northeast Ohio work by the third quarter of next year and that the Solon facility would close outright by the end of 2027. Nestlé told Cleveland.com, in reporting cited by Manufacturing.net, that it expects to file a notice with state officials next spring, and officials did not indicate how many jobs would be affected by the decision.

The company told Cleveland.com, in a statement quoted by Manufacturing.net, that moving pouch production “as customer needs and volumes evolve” represented “the most sustainable path forward.” Its other facilities in Northeast Ohio would not be impacted, Manufacturing.net reported.

“We understand that this decision is difficult, not only for employees, but also for the community members who have deep ties to the Solon factory,” the company added in the statement reported by Manufacturing.net.

The closure is a long runway rather than an immediate shutdown. With a wind-down stretching into next year and a final closure date at the end of 2027, Solon workers and city officials have more than a year before the plant’s last day, though the number of affected jobs remains unknown until the company’s state filing next spring.

Manufacturing.net reported that Nestlé operates seven facilities and employs nearly 3,000 people in Ohio, including a new Purina pet food plant near Cincinnati. That broader Ohio footprint is not part of this closure, according to the company’s statement to Cleveland.com as cited by Manufacturing.net.

For Solon, a Cuyahoga County community that has long hosted manufacturing employers, the coming state notice will be the next concrete step to watch. It should confirm the timeline and the scale of the job losses attached to the move to South Carolina.

What happens next is the spring filing with state officials, followed by the phased wind-down of pouch production in Solon through next year. NewsForce247 will follow the filing for the job count the company has not yet released.
