Marion General Hospital Wins $1.3 Million Award in State Rural Health ProgramPhoto: Marion General Hospital

Marion General Hospital has been awarded $1.3 million through Ohio’s Rural Health Transformation Program, money the hospital will put toward quality-improvement projects such as opening additional healthcare units and expanding services, State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) announced Tuesday. Marion General is one of 22 rural hospitals across the state receiving a one-time investment in the program’s initial round of awards, and the announcement puts Marion County’s hospital in line for state support aimed squarely at strengthening care close to home.

Governor Mike DeWine’s office confirmed the award in its own announcement of the program, listing Marion General Hospital in Marion among the 22 hospitals each receiving $1,377,479 for specific quality-improvement projects. According to the governor’s office, projects funded across the program include opening behavioral health units to support substance use disorder treatment and mental health services, adding on-site MRI services, and expanding diagnostic services in areas where capacity is limited or patients face waitlists.

Richardson, whose district includes Marion, said the award recognizes the hospital’s central place in the community. “Investing in our rural hospitals means investing in the future of our communities, which is why I am delighted to share that Marion General Hospital was awarded $1.3 million through this program,” Richardson said in the announcement. “Marion General is a vital resource within the Marion community, and this funding will help ensure residents have access to the quality care they deserve.”

The Marion award is part of a $92 million package of initial awards administered by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) through the Rural Health Transformation Program. Of that total, $31.4 million will establish or expand Clinically Integrated Networks and Rural Health Innovation Hubs, $30.3 million will go toward improving maternal care, and $30.3 million funds the one-time investments in the 22 rural hospitals, according to the announcement.

The Rural Health Transformation Fund was created as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill that President Trump signed in July 2025. The Ohio House Rural Hospital Caucus advocated for the one-time investment awards to go to rural independent hospitals, and Richardson’s announcement said the funding will help hospitals manage chronic illnesses and expand access to preventive, primary, maternal, and behavioral healthcare.

The caucus has emphasized that rural independent hospitals anchor the communities they serve, providing emergency care, employment opportunities, and overall community well-being. State health officials made a similar point in the governor’s announcement. “Our goal is to provide the best and most timely patient care as close to home as possible, and to create networks that effectively coordinate quality preventive and follow-up care, all of which are essential for the best patient care,” ODH Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said in the governor’s announcement.

For Marion-area patients, the practical promise of the award is more care available locally: additional units, expanded services, and shorter waits instead of trips to larger metro hospitals for treatment. The announcement described the funding as a way to strengthen rural health care infrastructure and support each hospital’s ability to serve patients in its own community.

The awards announced this week are the program’s initial round, and the Marion General funding is designated for quality-improvement projects. Richardson’s office invited residents seeking more detail about the announcement to contact her office at [email protected].
