Voters voting by mail face a deadline this week. Absentee ballot applications must be received by the board of elections by 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, the Secretary of State’s schedule states, and absentee ballots must be received by the board by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day, November 3. The board says it has a secure drop box available 24 hours a day in the door of its office, under surveillance, for applications, ballots and registrations.

Sample ballots posted by the board show statewide contests, including governor and lieutenant governor, attorney general, auditor, secretary of state, treasurer, U.S. senator, and Ohio Supreme Court justices and statewide Issue 3, the proposed photo-identification constitutional amendment. Ballots also list representative to Congress in the 5th District, state representative in the 87th District, a Court of Appeals judge for the 3rd District, and county offices including county commissioner and county auditor.

Local questions vary by precinct, so voters should check their own sample ballot. Some ballots include a proposed continuation of a 0.5 percent county sales and use tax for the general fund, the sheriff’s department and emergency medical services for five years, along with school, mental-health and fire-district levies.

On Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, voters who have not voted early or by mail will vote at their assigned precinct polling place, not at the board office, with polls open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. statewide. Early in-person voting happens only at the board office in Upper Sandusky and ends at 5 p.m. on November 1.
