A 66-year-old woman and a 7-year-old girl were killed Monday morning in a two-vehicle crash on State Route 73 in Washington Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Troopers from the Patrol’s Portsmouth Post responded to the crash at about 7:35 a.m. on State Route 73 at Calverts Lane, near West Portsmouth in Scioto County.

The Patrol said a 2010 Hyundai Elantra driven by Christina Madden, 66, of South Shore, Kentucky, was turning left from State Route 73 onto Calverts Lane when it failed to yield and was struck by a southbound 2025 Chevrolet Silverado. Madden and her passenger, 7-year-old Alannah Madden, died at the scene, the Patrol said.

The Silverado was driven by John Mahle Jr., 26, of Lucasville, according to the Patrol. Mahle was transported by Portsmouth Ambulance to Southern Ohio Medical Center with minor injuries.

The crash closed State Route 73/104 at Calverts Lane on Monday morning while crews investigated. The Washington Township Fire Department, relayed through the Scioto County Emergency Management Agency, asked drivers to seek an alternate route while the investigation continued, and the Patrol said the closure lasted into the morning. State Routes 73 and 104 run concurrently for more than six miles north from Portsmouth through Washington Township, passing near West Portsmouth, so the closure affected a main route for drivers traveling through the western part of Scioto County on Monday morning.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Washington Township Fire Department, the Portsmouth Emergency Ambulance Service, the Scioto County Coroner’s Office and the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, according to the Patrol.

The Patrol’s preliminary investigation found that the Elantra failed to yield as it made the left turn onto Calverts Lane and was struck by the southbound Silverado. The Patrol did not release any additional information about factors in the crash in its initial report.
