The VA Central Ohio Health Care System in Columbus has received federal funding for Non-recurring Maintenance projects in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced on October 21. The funding follows additional money the system received earlier in the year for similar work.
The fourth-quarter projects planned for Central Ohio are an additional boiler for the Columbus site, infrastructure upgrades to support electronic health record modernization, and a roof replacement for Building 1A. The projects are part of maintenance and improvement work at the Columbus facility rather than new construction.
The Central Ohio funding is part of a record $4.8 billion in nationwide VA spending in fiscal year 2026 to modernize, repair and improve facilities through the Veterans Health Administration’s Non-recurring Maintenance program. The VA said it obligated all $4.8 billion that was available for the program in fiscal year 2026.
Nationally, the fourth-quarter funding included $1.183 billion to repair and upgrade outdated infrastructure systems, $938 million for major building upgrades such as elevators, electrical systems and boiler plants, and $560 million for facility infrastructure supporting electronic health record updates. The Columbus boiler and records projects fall within those same categories of work.
Medical Center Director Dr. Marc Cooperman said the funding “allows the VA Central Ohio Health Care System to continue modernizing and improving, so our facility remains safe, efficient, and equipped to provide high-quality care for our Veterans in Central Ohio.”
For veterans in central Ohio, the work is aimed at the systems that support day-to-day care in Columbus, including heating capacity from the additional boiler, a renewed roof over Building 1A, and the building infrastructure needed for the updated electronic health record system. The VA said nationally it enrolled more than 300,000 new veterans in VA health care in 2026 and opened 43 new VA health care facilities nationwide.
The announcement did not list a separate dollar amount or construction timeline for the individual Columbus projects. The work will proceed as part of the fiscal year 2026 Non-recurring Maintenance program, which the VA uses to address repairs and upgrades at existing facilities across the country. Together with the funding received earlier in the year, the fourth-quarter projects continue that work at the Columbus site through the end of the fiscal year program.
