The University of Toledo women’s volleyball team rallied from two sets down to beat Bowling Green State University 3-2 in the Battle of I-75 at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green on Tuesday night, November 3. According to the University of Toledo Athletics report of the match, the Rockets dropped the first two sets 21-25 and 23-25, then won the next three 25-22, 25-23 and 15-8 to complete the reverse sweep — and officially clinch a spot in the 2026 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Tournament.
The clinch carries a piece of program history. Toledo Athletics reported that the berth establishes a program-record sixth straight season in the MAC Tournament. The victory also marked Toledo’s first win at the Stroh Center over the Falcons since a 3-2 win on October 6, 2023. Toledo improved to 19-4 overall and 11-2 in MAC play, while Bowling Green fell to 18-6.
The shape of the night is what made it remarkable. A reverse sweep leaves no margin for a bad stretch the rest of the way, and Toledo had to win two straight close sets, 25-22 and 25-23, just to force a fifth. Once there, the Rockets produced their most lopsided set of the evening, closing out the match 15-8 — a composed finish, in a hostile building on Election Night, to a match that had looked lost an hour earlier.
The setting added to the stakes. The Battle of I-75, presented by Fremont Federal Credit Union according to Toledo Athletics, pairs two universities a short drive apart along Interstate 75, and Bowling Green promoted the evening as an Orange Wave at the Stroh Center. Bowling Green State University Athletics had billed November 3 as a headline date on its promotional schedule, with fans wearing an “I Voted” sticker on Election Day able to buy tickets for $7.
Tuesday’s result extended a run of form Toledo carried through the final weekend of October. In its October 31 report, the University of Toledo Athletics said the Rockets completed an undefeated weekend with a 3-1 win at Miami (24-26, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20), their fourth straight victory at that point. That report credited Sierra Pertzborn, Jessica Costlow and Sophie Catalano with key kills in the Miami match — the attacking core Toledo leaned on heading into Bowling Green.
The longer timeline shows two programs that have circled each other all season. Bowling Green and Toledo jointly hosted the BGSU/Toledo Invitational on September 18-19, according to Bowling Green State University Athletics’ schedule announcement — but the rivals saved their meetings for MAC play. Bowling Green’s October 28 preview framed the Ball State and Toledo matches as a pivotal run between top-four MAC programs. Toledo’s comeback win reshuffled exactly that top-of-the-table picture.
Consistency is the thread running through this Toledo season. The university’s October 31 report noted that the Miami win gave the Rockets their 10th MAC victory and extended their streak to six straight seasons with 10 or more league wins. Tuesday’s berth pushes that consistency into the postseason for a program-record sixth consecutive year — evidence of a program that now expects to be playing for a conference championship every November.
For Bowling Green, the loss stings precisely because of how close it was. The Falcons controlled the first two sets in front of their home crowd and needed just one more to close out a rivalry win. Instead, they must regroup quickly, with a trip to Western Michigan scheduled for Saturday, November 7, according to the Bowling Green State University Athletics schedule, before the rivalry resumes in Toledo.
What we know — and what we’re still waiting on: Confirmed, per the University of Toledo Athletics match report, are the result — a 3-2 reverse sweep (21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-8) — Toledo’s 19-4 and 11-2 records, and the tournament berth with its program-record sixth straight tournament season. Not yet settled is seeding: the regular season still has matches to run, and neither program’s final tournament position will be known until the closing weekend is complete.
Toledo’s season sits inside a busy stretch for the university. NewsForce247 has also covered UToledo’s $897,557 project to rebuild 1,700 feet of Swan Creek and Great Lakes AI Week bringing major employers to the UToledo campus on November 12. Ohio volleyball fans can also follow McNicholas and Seton advancing to the OHSAA volleyball regional finals.
What happens next is a quick reunion. BG Falcon Media’s account of the 2026 conference slate has the second leg of the Battle of I-75 set for Tuesday, November 10, at Savage Arena in Toledo, giving Bowling Green an immediate chance to answer on the Rockets’ home floor. After the regular season closes, the MAC Volleyball Championship is scheduled for November 20-22 at Worthen Arena in Muncie, Indiana, according to the Bowling Green State University Athletics schedule — quarterfinals November 20, semifinals November 21 and the championship match November 22.
For northwest Ohio fans, Tuesday night delivered the best version of this rivalry: a five-set finish and a postseason berth decided on the floor rather than by tiebreakers. Toledo leaves with the win and a record streak. Bowling Green leaves with a week to prepare for the rematch — and every reason to believe the next meeting will be just as tight.
