Springboro boys cross country team wins Division I state title at ObetzBoys cross country runners race at the state championship meet

OBETZ, Ohio — Springboro’s boys are state champions. The Panthers won the Division I team title at the OHSAA state cross country championships on Saturday, November 7, at Fortress Obetz and Memorial Park, scoring 107 points to finish on top of the 20-team field, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Senior Nicholas Beatty led the way for Springboro, finishing 16th in 15:41.6 in the 10:40 a.m. race.

It was a pack, not a single star, that carried the Panthers to the trophy. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, seniors Nolan Hicks, Maxwell Gerstner and Tyson Andrews all finished in the top 30 along with junior Joshua Linde, and Quintin Harty and Gavin Harty also contributed to the championship run. That depth held up against a field led individually by Little Miami senior Ryne Reynolds, who won the Division I boys race in 15:01.4, with junior teammate Ian Patrick second in 15:10.7, the Enquirer reported.

Greater Cincinnati programs filled out the top of the team standings behind Springboro. Mason finished third, St. Xavier was sixth and Milford took ninth, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Springboro’s title also changed hands within the region: Beavercreek entered the meet as the defending Division I boys champion, according to the Akron Beacon Journal’s state meet preview, and the Panthers leave Obetz holding the crown instead.

The state title capped a two-week run that rewrote the program’s postseason history. At the Division I regional meet at Troy on October 31, Springboro scored 72 points to beat Mason’s 83 and win the program’s first regional crown, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported, in coverage the Dayton Daily News also reported from Troy. Beatty finished third in that regional race and Hicks eighth, giving the senior-heavy lineup the front-running strength it carried into Obetz.

Conditions at Fortress Obetz made for a true November championship test. The Akron Beacon Journal reported temperatures in the mid-40s under overcast skies, with a northwest wind around 10 mph and no rain expected — the kind of cold, gray morning where a deep scoring pack matters more than one fast time, and Springboro’s five scorers were built for exactly that kind of race.

The Panthers’ girls made it a strong day for the whole program. Springboro’s Tessa Andrews finished 11th in the Division I girls race in 18:34.5, and the Panther girls placed sixth in the team standings with 208 points, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Between the boys’ championship and the girls’ top-six finish, Springboro was one of the most complete programs on the course on Saturday.

The state meet closes the Ohio high school cross country season, so there is no next race to chase — only the celebration, the trophy’s trip back to Warren County, and an offseason. Springboro will graduate the senior core of Beatty, Hicks, Gerstner and Andrews that delivered the title, and junior Joshua Linde, a top-30 finisher on Saturday, becomes a centerpiece of the group that will try to defend it next fall.
