Mentor waited five weeks for a second shot at Strongsville, and the Cardinals made it count. Third-seeded Mentor rolled past the sixth-seeded Mustangs 45-14 on Friday night in a Division I, Region 1 quarterfinal, avenging a regular-season loss and advancing to the regional semifinals of the OHSAA playoffs.
The final score was confirmed on the statewide scoreboards published by The Columbus Dispatch, the Mansfield News Journal and the Zanesville Times Recorder. Mentor improved to 9-2, while Strongsville’s season ended at 8-4.
To understand what Friday meant in Mentor, start on Oct. 2. That night, Strongsville went to Mentor and won 56-30, a result OhioVarsity noted ended the Cardinals’ 21-game Greater Cleveland Conference winning streak. It was the kind of loss that follows a team around for the rest of a season — and the kind that turns a playoff rematch into something much bigger than a bracket line.
The rematch brought the same two teams back to the same field with the stakes reversed. Strongsville arrived at 8-3 as the region’s No. 6 seed; Mentor, 8-2 and the No. 3 seed, had home field and a month of motivation. This time the Cardinals controlled the night from start to finish, outscoring the Mustangs by 31 points in a game that was never allowed to turn into the shootout the first meeting became.
The swing between the two meetings tells the story of Mentor’s November form. In October, Strongsville’s offense put up 56 points. On Friday, the Mustangs managed 14 — a defensive turnaround of six touchdowns in five weeks, against the same opponent, with a season on the line.
The history between the programs made the result resonate beyond one Friday night. According to OhioVarsity’s historical database, Mentor leads the recorded head-to-head series with Strongsville 21-4, and the Cardinals own a 14-3 record in Week 12 games — the regional quarterfinal round — across the decades covered by the Ohio Varsity Football Almanac. Friday’s win fits squarely into that tradition: when the calendar turns to November in Mentor, the Cardinals are usually still playing.
Strongsville’s season, it should be said, was no disappointment. The Mustangs shared the Greater Cleveland Conference title picture with Mentor and Riverside this fall — Sports On Tap’s conference coverage listed all three among the GCC champions — and their Oct. 2 win in Mentor was one of the biggest results anywhere in Northeast Ohio this season. They simply ran into the version of Mentor that has been building toward this month all year.
Friday’s other Region 1 quarterfinals set up a heavyweight final four. Top-seeded St. Edward beat rival St. Ignatius 38-19 in the playoff edition of the Holy War, while Hudson routed Jackson 44-14 and Canton McKinley rallied past Austintown-Fitch 27-22. Read our coverage of St. Edward’s Holy War win and McKinley’s comeback at Fitch for the full picture of the region.
For Mentor’s players, the revenge angle was only ever about one thing: surviving to play another week. Playoff football does not award style points for settling scores, and the Cardinals’ coaching staff will spend this week making sure the emotional high of Friday night becomes preparation rather than distraction.
The community side of a run like this is real, too. A 9-2 team playing at home in mid-November means one more Friday of packed stands, one more week of signs in business windows along Mentor Avenue, and one more bus ride’s worth of belief for a senior class that has now won the game it circled in October.
Mentor’s win also continued a pattern that defines this rivalry in the postseason: the Cardinals protect their home field in November. Strongsville had to win a first-round game just to earn this trip, while Mentor, as a top-four seed, waited through its bye week with the Oct. 2 film on repeat. That extra week showed in the preparation — the Mustangs’ offense, which produced 56 points in the first meeting behind the same personnel, found every answer from the rematch already waiting for it. Playoff rematches usually tighten; this one widened, and the widening is the measure of how far Mentor has come since the first Friday of October.
What happens next: Mentor faces Canton McKinley in a Division I, Region 1 semifinal on Friday, Nov. 13. The Bulldogs reached the semifinal by rallying past Fitch 27-22, and they will bring one of Ohio’s proudest programs into a matchup of two teams that both just won their rematch-style tests. The winner moves to the regional final, one step from the state semifinals in Canton.
