MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio — One man is dead and another is in serious condition after a shooting late Saturday morning inside an apartment building on Lee Road in Maple Heights, according to the Maple Heights Police Department.
Officers responded to the building at 5445 Lee Road at about 11:50 a.m. Saturday after reports of gunfire, police said. Inside, officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds in a hallway of the building, according to police information reported by Cleveland 19 News (WOIO) and by WKYC in Cleveland.
One of the men was taken to Marymount Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said. The second man was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he was reported to be in serious condition on Saturday.
Police have not released the names of either man. Their identities are being withheld while their families are notified, according to the reports, and police have not said whether the two men knew each other or what may have led to the gunfire.
The Maple Heights Police Department’s Detective Bureau is investigating the shooting with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, police said. State agents from BCI routinely assist local departments with evidence collection and processing at major crime scenes in Ohio. No suspect information has been released, and police have not announced any arrests in the case.
What is known so far is limited to the police account: a late-morning response to an apartment building, two men found shot inside, and one of them dead within hours. What remains unanswered — who fired the shots, whether the shooter was still nearby when officers arrived, and what preceded the gunfire — is what detectives will be working to establish.
Maple Heights is a suburb southeast of Cleveland in Cuyahoga County, and Lee Road is one of the city’s main north-south corridors, lined with apartment buildings, churches and businesses near the Warrensville Heights border.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Maple Heights Detective Bureau at 216-587-9624, police said. NewsForce247 will update this story as police release additional information, including the victims’ identities once their families have been notified.
