The championships, spread over three days, showcased seven thrilling finals across divisions I through VII. Each matchup delivered its own drama, from last-second heroics to defensive slugfests, reminding everyone why the OHSAA State Finals remain a highlight of the Ohio sports calendar.
Division I: Powerhouse Perseverance
In the Division I final, Lakewood St. Edward reclaimed its crown with a commanding performance, blending disciplined defense with a relentless ground game. The Eagles celebrated back in Cleveland with a parade through the city streets and a gathering at the school gym, where fans, alumni, and students honored the team’s senior leaders. Head Coach Tom Lombardo called it “a testament to the standard our boys have built.”
Division II: First-Time Glory
Massillon Washington, playing just miles from home, made history by earning its first OHSAA-recognized football championship after decades of near misses. The Tigers’ 28–21 win ignited celebrations across Stark County, with downtown Massillon glowing in team colors and the famous Tiger Swing Band leading a community rally. “We’ve been waiting generations for this,” said one lifelong fan. “It’s finally real.”
Division III: Repeat Royalty
In Division III, Toledo Central Catholic continued its dynasty, picking up yet another state title behind quarterback brilliance and defensive dominance. Players celebrated late into the night with their fans at a local banquet hall, while school officials announced a special assembly to honor the program’s sustained success.
Division IV and V: Small-Town Pride, Big-Time Moments
The Division IV title went to Glenville, continuing the Tarblooders’ storybook run as a Cleveland powerhouse that has inspired inner-city programs statewide. Meanwhile, Coldwater edged out a nail-biting victory in Division V, marking the program’s eighth state championship. The entire Mercer County community gathered downtown for a firetruck parade, a tradition as much a part of Coldwater football as Friday night lights.
Division VI and VII: Tradition Meets Resilience
Marion Local capped another undefeated season with a decisive win in Division VI, further cementing its place as one of Ohio’s most successful programs. Across town, New Bremen took home the Division VII crown, using defense and perseverance to secure its second state title in four years. Both programs were honored with community breakfasts and student send-offs before classes resumed Monday.
A Weekend of Statewide Celebration
As the stands cleared and the field lights dimmed, fans lingered in Akon’s December chill, savoring the memories of another unforgettable championship weekend. From Cleveland to Cincinnati, from rural towns to urban neighborhoods, Ohioans spent Sunday in celebration—proof that in this football-loving state, victory isn’t just about trophies. It’s about tradition, community, and pride that lasts long after the final whistle.
