COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police have identified the young woman killed in an Oct. 30 shooting on the city’s Southwest Side as Aaliyah Chan, 18, a Columbus City Schools graduate, according to a Columbus Division of Police media release reported by The Columbus Dispatch.
Police responded to a report of a shooting at about 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 30 at a condominium in the 1000 block of Hardesty Place West, police said in the release reported by the Dispatch. Medics with the Columbus Division of Fire began treating a first victim at the scene, and Chan was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:56 p.m., police said, according to the Dispatch.
Two other people were hurt, according to the police release reported by the Dispatch. The first victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, and a third victim took themselves to a hospital and was released after treatment, police said.
Homicide detectives believe the shooting stemmed from a robbery attempt, and no suspects have been publicly identified, the Dispatch reported. The identification of Chan on Monday, Nov. 2, was the first name police have released in the case; the department’s earlier account of the Oct. 30 shooting, also reported by the Dispatch, described one person dead and two injured before any victim had been named.
Mike Brown, a spokesperson for Columbus City Schools, told The Columbus Dispatch on Nov. 2 that Chan graduated from Briggs High School this past spring. ABC 6 (WSYX) reported that Chan’s family is remembering her at home in Columbus as relatives grieve her death.
Friends and family have created a GoFundMe to help with burial expenses, and as of Nov. 2 the fundraiser had raised more than $4,600 toward a $5,500 goal, the Dispatch reported.
The shooting happened at a condominium just off Eakin Road on the Southwest Side, ABC 6 (WSYX) reported in its coverage of the family’s response. Police have not publicly described what led up to the robbery attempt or whether the victims and the shooter knew each other, according to the Dispatch’s reporting.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Columbus police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477, according to the police information reported by the Dispatch.
