BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Bowling Green State University’s women’s soccer team did the one thing it had to do on the final day of the regular season, blanking Ohio University 2-0 at Cochrane Stadium on Sunday to clinch a berth in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Haley Wolf’s first collegiate goal proved to be the game winner, according to Bowling Green State University Athletics, whose recap of the match was published by BVM Sports. The Falcons added a second goal to close out the 2-0 shutout and secure their place in the six-team conference tournament field.
The Falcons entered Sunday in seventh place in the 12-team MAC standings, with only the top six teams qualifying for the league tournament, according to BGSU Athletics’ preview of the match. Bowling Green had 14 points, sitting just one point behind sixth-place Eastern Michigan and two points behind the three teams tied in third, so the Falcons needed a result — and help — on the season’s final day.
The pressure had built three days earlier in Oxford, where BGSU drew 2-2 with Miami on Oct. 29 and slipped to seventh place, outside the playoff spots, BG Falcon Media reported. That result left Sunday’s home finale against the Bobcats as a must-win match, with head coach Chris Fox’s team also needing the right result elsewhere in the conference to climb back into the top six.
Wolf, a junior defender, delivered the decisive moment with the first goal of her collegiate career, per BGSU Athletics via BVM Sports. A first career goal is a milestone in any match; in a win-or-go-home regular-season finale, it sent Bowling Green into the postseason.
The shutout also continued a pattern for the Falcons at home, where their most recent home match before Sunday was also a 2-0 win, over Buffalo, according to BGSU Athletics. Admission to Sunday’s finale at Cochrane Stadium was free, and the match was televised on BCSN in the Toledo area and streamed on ESPN+, per the university’s preview.
What happens next is the MAC Tournament itself, which begins Saturday, Nov. 7, with two quarterfinal-round matches at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, according to BGSU Athletics. Bowling Green’s opponent, seed and kickoff time will be set by the conference once the final standings are official.
For a team that spent the last week of the season on the outside of the bracket looking in, Sunday’s 2-0 win turned a nervous final day into a trip to Columbus — and keeps the Falcons’ season alive into November tournament play.
