The Columbus Blue Jackets activated defenseman Ivan Provorov off injured reserve on Saturday, the club announced through the NHL, ending an absence that had stretched across the first 11 games of the 2026-27 season and returning the team’s minutes leader on defense just as Columbus headed into a Saturday night game at the Dallas Stars.

Provorov, 29, suffered a lower-body injury in a preseason game at the Detroit Red Wings on Sept. 26, according to the Blue Jackets’ announcement on NHL.com, and had not played a regular-season game this fall. Club President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell announced the activation on Saturday, hours before the 8 p.m. ET puck drop at American Airlines Center in Dallas.

The return restores one of the steadiest pieces of the Columbus blue line. In 246 appearances with the Blue Jackets since arriving in a three-team trade involving the Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings on June 6, 2023, Provorov has registered 21 goals and 75 assists for 96 points, the club said, while averaging 23:27 of ice time per game.

Across 10 NHL seasons with Columbus and Philadelphia, Provorov has recorded 86 goals and 227 assists for 313 points in 778 games, averaging 23:53 a night, according to the team’s announcement. Philadelphia originally selected him in the first round, seventh overall, at the 2015 NHL Draft.

His most recent full season underlined why Columbus leaned on him so heavily. Provorov played in all 82 games in 2025-26, posting nine goals and 22 assists for 31 points, leading the team with 134 blocked shots and ranking second on the club in average ice time — a figure that placed him 10th in the entire NHL, the Blue Jackets said.

Without him, Columbus has had to spread those minutes across a younger defense corps for the season’s first month. Getting a veteran who can play in every situation — even strength, penalty kill and late-game defensive stands — changes what the coaching staff can ask of the rest of the lineup, particularly on the road against a Dallas team that tests defenses with its depth.

Saturday’s game is also the start of a demanding stretch for central Ohio hockey fans, who have plenty of Columbus storylines competing for attention this weekend. The Columbus Crew played D.C. United on Saturday with a playoff berth within reach, a run NewsForce247 detailed in its report that the Crew can clinch a playoff berth with a win and the right help on Sunday.

The Crew also honored a familiar face Saturday: veteran goalkeeper Evan Bush, the former University of Akron star, announced this week that he will retire after the 2026 season, as NewsForce247 reported in its story on Evan Bush’s retirement announcement.

Durability had been a hallmark of Provorov’s Columbus tenure before this fall. A defenseman who plays all 82 games, blocks shots at a team-leading rate and still ranks among the league’s top 10 in average ice time is difficult to replace by committee, and his absence forced Columbus to audition combinations it would not otherwise have used this early in a season. His activation gives the club the option to settle those pairings for the first time this year.

For the Blue Jackets, the immediate question is how quickly Provorov’s game timing returns after more than a month away. Defensemen who log heavy minutes typically need a few games to rebuild the conditioning and reads that preseason work alone cannot replicate, and Columbus will be balancing his workload against the risk of asking too much too soon.

What we know — and what we’re still waiting on

What we know: Provorov is off injured reserve, is available for Saturday’s game at Dallas, and brings a documented track record as Columbus’s most-used defenseman. What we’re still waiting on: his exact pairing and minutes for his first game back, and whether the club makes a corresponding roster move to keep its defensive rotation balanced in the coming days.

What happens next is straightforward. Provorov’s return begins Saturday night in Dallas, with the game televised on the Blue Jackets Hockey Network beginning with a pregame show at 7:30 p.m. ET, according to the team, and heard on the Blue Jackets Radio Network, including Sports Radio 97.1 The Fan in Columbus. How he looks in that first outing will set the tone for how much of the blue line’s burden he resumes in the weeks ahead.
