Bowling Green State University softball is getting an upgraded home. BGSU Athletics announced Oct. 30 that Meserve Field will undergo significant renovations, fueled by a major philanthropic commitment from University Trustee and longtime Falcon supporter Paul J. Hooker, the university said in its announcement.

The investment will bring expanded dugouts, dedicated player restrooms within the dugouts, and improved drainage surrounding the dugout areas at Meserve Field, according to BGSU. The university said the enhancements will strengthen the everyday student-athlete experience while helping position the program for continued success.

Hooker shared his plans in a surprise announcement to the Falcon softball team earlier this fall, BGSU said. The university described the commitment as the catalyst for the Meserve Field enhancements and another step in the continued growth of BGSU Athletics.

"We are incredibly grateful for this generous donation and for a person who believes in our softball program," BGSU head softball coach Michelle Gardner said in the university’s announcement. "His investment in our facility is about so much more than improving a space — it’s about creating opportunities and building a legacy that will benefit our student-athletes and program for years to come."

Gardner, quoted in the BGSU announcement, added: "We are honored to have his support and cannot thank him enough for believing in what we are building." The project, the university said, is about more than facilities — it represents a commitment to the future of Falcon softball and the student-athletes who represent Bowling Green.

The gift continues a long pattern. "Hooker’s latest commitment builds upon a remarkable legacy of philanthropic support for Bowling Green State University," Vice President of Athletics Strategy Derek van der Merwe said in the university’s announcement, pointing to Hooker’s earlier investments in the Student Green and in improvements to Steller Field, the home of Falcon baseball.

"Now, his commitment to Falcon softball continues that legacy, creating meaningful opportunities for student-athletes and leaving a lasting impact on the University community," van der Merwe said in the announcement.

Facilities matter in college softball recruiting and in the day-to-day life of a program. Dugouts with dedicated restrooms and drainage that keeps the field area playable after rain are basic quality-of-life upgrades for players and coaches, and they signal to recruits that a university is investing in the sport rather than letting it make do.

The announcement lands in a busy stretch of investment news for Bowling Green. Earlier this week, BGSU won a $1.95 million federal grant to grow civic education for Ohio teachers, and the athletics department is also courting fans as basketball season opens — Bowling Green unveiled $3 tickets and fan upgrades as basketball tips off Monday. The softball project extends that momentum to the spring sports calendar.

BGSU did not announce a dollar figure for Hooker’s commitment or a construction start date in its Oct. 30 release. The university said the Meserve Field enhancements are anticipated to be completed in fall 2027.

That timeline means the Falcons will play through the coming seasons while the work is planned and carried out, with the finished upgrades in place for the program’s future rosters. What happens next: BGSU moves from announcement to design and construction planning, with the fall 2027 completion target as the date to watch.

What we know — and what we’re still waiting on

What we know: the project is funded by trustee Paul J. Hooker’s philanthropic commitment, announced to the team in a surprise reveal earlier this fall and made public by BGSU on Oct. 30; the work covers expanded dugouts, dedicated player restrooms in the dugouts and improved drainage around them; and the university targets completion in fall 2027. What we’re still waiting on: the size of Hooker’s commitment, a construction start date, and whether any Falcon home games will be displaced while the work is underway — none of which BGSU included in its announcement.

The timeline behind the project is short but telling: Hooker told the players his plans earlier this fall, the university made the commitment public on Oct. 30, and the roughly two-year runway to fall 2027 gives the program a defined finish line — a renovated Meserve Field waiting for the Falcons well before the end of the decade, built, in Gardner’s words in the announcement, on a legacy meant to benefit student-athletes for years to come.
