ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan fired football coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday after an internal investigation uncovered evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

University President Santa Ono and Athletic Director Warde Manuel announced the decision in a joint statement. They said Moore’s conduct fell short of the school’s standards for integrity and professionalism. The investigation began weeks ago following a complaint in the athletic department, though specifics remain private due to confidentiality.

Moore, 39, took over as head coach last year after Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL following Michigan’s 2024 national championship. He had risen quickly from offensive line coach to coordinator. In a statement, Moore expressed regret for disappointing the university, players and fans, and plans to reflect on the matter.

Assistant head coach Jesse Minter will serve as interim head coach. Michigan did not provide a timeline for a permanent hire. The move adds to recent turbulence in the program despite its strong recruiting and on-field success.
