St. Xavier turned a regular-season loss into a playoff rout Friday night, stunning third-seeded Lakota West 51-14 in West Chester in a Division I, Region 4 quarterfinal — a final reported by both the Cincinnati Enquirer and The Columbus Dispatch. The sixth-seeded Bombers (7-5) forced a running clock in the third quarter of a game Lakota West won 20-7 in Week 1.
Junior running back Aiden Graham was the story of the night, carrying 30 times for 252 yards and five touchdowns, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer’s top performers report. Graham’s scoring night powered an offense that overwhelmed a Lakota West defense that had allowed just seven points in the teams’ first meeting.
St. Xavier’s defense matched the effort, holding Northwestern commit Kenyon Norman to 26 yards on eight carries, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported, as the Firebirds (9-2) never recovered from the Bombers’ early surge.
The loss ends Lakota West’s season at 9-2, one year after a deep playoff run, while St. Xavier — which entered the postseason at 6-5 — has now won in consecutive weeks to reach the regional semifinals as the region’s lowest remaining seed.
The reward is a familiar one: St. Xavier travels to Elder and The Pit on Friday, Nov. 13 for the Region 4 semifinal, one of Ohio’s great rivalry venues in one of its biggest games of the year. Elder advanced Friday with a 37-20 win over Springboro.
Few results anywhere in Ohio on Friday turned more heads than a 37-point road win by a No. 6 seed against the team that had beaten it 20-7 in Week 1. St. Xavier arrived at 6-5, hardened by a demanding Greater Catholic League South schedule, and on Friday the Bombers played like the battle-tested team that schedule produced.
What happens next will test whether Friday was a breakthrough or a one-night explosion. Graham and the Bombers get a rested, veteran Elder team at home — and the winner moves within a game of the state semifinals.
