A North Royalton firefighter has died and a second firefighter remains in serious but stable condition after both were injured Monday night, November 2, while battling a house fire in neighboring Broadview Heights, city officials announced Tuesday. The fallen firefighter was among the North Royalton crews who responded into Broadview Heights, and his death marks a line-of-duty loss that has drawn condolences from fire departments across Northeast Ohio.

Firefighters responded to the 2100 block of West Royalton Road in Broadview Heights before 9 p.m. on November 2, WJW reported in coverage cited by FireRescue1. During the firefight, dispatch radio traffic captured a mayday call, along with a report that a firefighter was down in the basement of the home and that a second squad was urgently needed, WJW reported. FireRescue1 noted that no details have been released on what led to the mayday or how the firefighters were injured.

Both North Royalton firefighters suffered extensive injuries, according to the City of North Royalton’s news release, and both were transported to a hospital by ambulance, Broadview Heights Police Chief Don Polick told WKYC 3News. In an update on Tuesday, North Royalton Mayor Paul F. Marnecheck II confirmed that one of the firefighters had died and that the second remained in serious but stable condition.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the fallen firefighter and his family, as well as our injured firefighter and his family. I ask our community to join me in keeping our firefighters and their families in your hearts and prayers, while respecting their privacy,” Mayor Marnecheck said in the City of North Royalton’s news release announcing the death. The mayor said the Fire Department had “suffered a loss of one of our own,” according to city officials quoted by Fire Engineering.

The fire also sent other responders to the hospital. Multiple police officers who responded to the scene were taken to a hospital after experiencing the effects of smoke inhalation, Chief Polick told WKYC 3News, and 19 News reported that several responding police officers were hospitalized with smoke-inhalation symptoms, according to Fire Engineering. No condition updates for those officers had been released by Tuesday evening.

At the North Royalton fire station, flags were flying at half-staff in honor of the fallen firefighter, WOIO reported in coverage cited by Firehouse.com. By Tuesday morning, fire departments from across the region had begun sharing messages of support for the North Royalton Fire Department, its members and the firefighter’s loved ones, WKYC reported — a familiar ritual in a profession where departments routinely answer one another’s calls across city lines.

That mutual-aid reality is central to this loss. North Royalton and Broadview Heights are neighboring communities in southern Cuyahoga County, and the fire burned on West Royalton Road — State Route 82 — a corridor both cities share. Broadview Heights Fire Chief Jeffrey Hajek told 3News that West Royalton Road was closed between State Road and Broadview Road because of the fire, according to a summary of that reporting by FirefighterCloseCalls.com. When a working house fire escalates to a mayday, the response quickly becomes regional, and on Monday night it was North Royalton firefighters who were inside the Broadview Heights home when conditions turned.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to a Broadview Heights Police Department post cited by The Repository, and firefighters remained at the scene as the investigation continued, Firehouse.com reported. Investigators have not said where or how the fire started, whether anyone was inside the home when it began, or what role the basement — where the mayday centered — played in the fire’s spread.

What we know — and what we’re still waiting on

What is confirmed is narrow and solemn: two North Royalton firefighters were extensively injured at the West Royalton Road fire on Monday night; one has died, and the other is in serious but stable condition. What is still unknown is considerable. The fallen firefighter’s identity has not been released by the city, and officials have not described how the mayday unfolded, what injured the two firefighters, or what caused the fire. No funeral, escort or memorial arrangements had been formally announced by officials as of Tuesday evening, and no updated condition report on the surviving firefighter had been issued beyond Tuesday’s serious-but-stable status.

The mayor has asked the community to respect the families’ privacy while the department grieves, and city officials have said additional information will be released at a later date, Fire Engineering reported. That pause is standard in line-of-duty deaths, where a firefighter’s name is typically withheld until family notifications are complete — and it is why North Royalton is, for now, mourning a colleague whose name its residents do not yet know.

What happens next will unfold on two tracks. Investigators will work to determine the fire’s cause and reconstruct the minutes around the mayday call, while the City of North Royalton is expected to release the fallen firefighter’s identity and service arrangements once the family is ready. Updates on the hospitalized firefighter’s condition, and any findings from the fire investigation on West Royalton Road, will be added to this story as officials confirm them.

Update — Tuesday, November 3, 2026: The fallen North Royalton firefighter has been identified as Ryan Milligan. WNIR 100 FM reported Tuesday that Milligan died from the injuries he suffered in the West Royalton Road fire, and Firefighter Close Calls, the fire-service publication that carries The Secret List, also identified Milligan as the firefighter who died in the line of duty in that fire. The City of North Royalton’s own news release announcing the death had not named the firefighter. The second injured North Royalton firefighter remains in serious but stable condition, as city officials reported earlier.
