One person died and another driver was taken into custody after a two-vehicle crash late Sunday morning on Columbus’ Northeast Side, according to Columbus police accounts reported by The Columbus Dispatch.

The crash happened around 10:50 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, near the intersection of Aberdeen Avenue and McGuffey Road, The Columbus Dispatch reported, citing Columbus police. The original 911 call to the area was for an unknown disturbance and possibly a person who had been shot, police told The Dispatch, but responding officers determined the call involved a two-vehicle crash instead.

Police said a 2005 Dodge Dakota pickup truck traveling west on Aberdeen Avenue ran the stop sign at McGuffey Road and hit a 2012 Buick Verano, according to The Columbus Dispatch. Both vehicles traveled across the road and into a yard after the impact, police said.

The driver of the Buick was taken to an area hospital but later died from their injuries, The Columbus Dispatch reported. The driver of the Dodge tried to run from the scene on foot, but officers took that driver into custody, according to the police account reported by The Dispatch. A 10TV report on the crash also confirmed one person died in the northeast Columbus collision.

The crash began with a call that pointed officers in a different direction. The original 911 call described an unknown disturbance and a possible shooting, The Columbus Dispatch reported, and it was only as more information came in that the incident was identified as a crash — a reminder, in the police account, of how little is settled in the first minutes of a fatal-collision response. What officers found at the intersection was two damaged vehicles in a yard and one driver already trying to leave on foot.

Police had not released the identities of the people involved as of Sunday evening, The Columbus Dispatch reported, and the report did not announce any charges against the driver taken into custody. Releasing a name in a fatal crash normally waits until family members have been notified.

What happens next: Columbus police continue to investigate the crash, including the moments before the pickup reached the McGuffey Road intersection. Anyone who saw the collision on Aberdeen Avenue on Sunday morning can share information with Columbus police as that investigation continues.
