South Range is a district volleyball champion again for the first time in 11 years. The unbeaten Raiders swept Coventry in straight sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-17, on Thursday night at Canfield to win the Division V district championship, according to YSN Live’s coverage of the match, keeping their perfect season alive at 25-0 and sending them into the regional tournament.
The title ends a drought that stretched back to 2015, when South Range swept Crestview 3-0 in that year’s district championship, YSN Live reported. A decade of strong Raider teams came and went without district gold, and this group — which has not lost a match all fall — finally broke through by playing the same balanced, relentless volleyball that carried it through an undefeated run to the Northeast 8 Conference championship.
Thursday’s final followed a familiar script. South Range came out firing in the opening set, establishing control with a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive play to take it 25-17, according to YSN Live. The Raiders turned up the pressure in the second set, pulling away for a convincing 25-15 win and a two-set lead.
With the championship one set away, South Range refused to let Coventry extend the night. YSN Live reported the Raiders maintained their intensity in the third set, closing out another 25-17 victory to complete the sweep and set off a championship celebration 11 years in the making.
Anna Toy led the charge with a tremendous all-around performance, hammering home a team-high 14 kills while adding 13 digs and one service ace, according to YSN Live. Toy’s ability to impact the match on both sides of the net kept the Raiders in control throughout, and the district title caps a week in which she was also named the 2026 NE8 Player of the Year, with teammates Haylie John and Lily Weaver earning first-team all-conference honors.
Weaver provided another strong presence at the net in the final, finishing with nine kills, three blocks and one ace, YSN Live reported. Her combination of offensive firepower and defensive toughness gave Coventry a second front-line problem it never solved.
The Raiders’ offense ran smoothly behind the setting duo of Parker Zwingler and Natalie Burnett, who each dished out 16 assists to keep South Range’s hitters involved and the attack balanced, according to YSN Live. Defensively, John anchored the back row with a team-high 15 digs, helping the Raiders extend rallies and turn defensive stops into scoring opportunities.
The road to Thursday ran through a familiar rival. In Tuesday’s district semifinal, South Range rolled past conference foe Poland in straight sets, 25-10, 25-16, 25-17, for its third sweep of the Bulldogs this season, YSN Live reported. That win moved the Raiders to 24-0 and into the title match against a Coventry team playing for its own place in the regional field.
District volleyball titles have been a theme across the area this week. In Central Ohio, unbeaten Pleasant swept Utica for its fourth straight district volleyball title, and at the college level, Ohio State took the first set before falling to No. 13 Penn State in four on Wednesday night.
For South Range, the numbers now attached to this season are difficult to overstate: 25 wins without a loss, a conference championship, the conference’s player of the year, and the program’s first district trophy since 2015. Every challenge the schedule has produced — league rivals, a district semifinal rematch, a championship match — has been answered in straight sets or close to it.
What happens next is the hardest test yet. South Range advances to the regional semifinals, where it will face Lakeview on Thursday in Medina, according to YSN Live. The Bulldogs enter fresh off their third consecutive district championship, a straight-set sweep of Columbiana, 25-16, 25-15, 25-6, on Wednesday night.
Lakeview brings its own firepower to that semifinal. In the Bulldogs’ district final, Cady Esker led the offense with a team-high 12 kills and three service aces, Cecelia DeToro directed the attack with 36 assists, and Anna Haynie recorded nine blocks at the net, according to YSN Live. It is, in other words, exactly the kind of balanced, experienced opponent that has ended other teams’ perfect seasons in past Novembers.
That matchup puts South Range’s unbeaten record on the line against a Lakeview program that has made district titles a habit, with a trip to the regional championship at stake. One perfect season will survive the night in Medina; the other team’s remarkable fall will end there.
