Northern Illinois built an 18-point halftime lead and led wire to wire in a 79-66 exhibition victory over Toledo on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 25, at Savage Arena in Toledo, according to Northern Illinois athletics.

The Huskies took a 37-19 lead into halftime, holding the Rockets to 33.3 percent shooting, 7 of 21 from the field, in the opening 20 minutes, including 0 of 7 from three-point range. Toledo did not make a three-pointer in the first half, and that cold start shaped the rest of the afternoon.

Northern Illinois finished at 45 percent from the field, 27 of 60, and 40 percent from three-point range, 12 of 30, with four Huskies scoring in double figures in the exhibition. The balance mattered: no single run after halftime depended on one shooter, and the Huskies answered each Toledo push with a basket of their own.

For Toledo, the afternoon was a second exhibition look at a roster still building toward the regular season, and the first-half shooting slump left the Rockets chasing the game after the break. A stronger second half cut into the margin but never erased the 18-point hole built before halftime.

The meeting carried a familiar Mid-American Conference feel even though it did not count. Toledo and Northern Illinois know each other from league play, and an exhibition against a conference opponent gives coaches a truer measure of size, pace and defensive pressure than a tune-up against an unfamiliar lower-division team.

Exhibition games do not count in the standings, but they are the last public test of rotations, defensive assignments and late-game lineups before the games begin to count in November. For Toledo, Sunday’s tape will focus on the opening 20 minutes: shot selection, spacing and the defensive stops that never came early.

Savage Arena, on the University of Toledo campus, is the Rockets’ home court, and Sunday’s exhibition gave home fans their final preseason look at the team on that floor before the regular season arrives.

Toledo now turns from exhibition play to final preparations for the regular-season opener, while Northern Illinois leaves Toledo with a road exhibition win built on its first-half defense and its balance across the lineup.
