CIRCLEVILLE — The “Greatest Free Show on Earth” is getting a little bigger. The 119th Circleville Pumpkin Show opens this week in downtown Circleville with an expanded schedule that adds an official Tuesday preview night and an eighth feature parade to the four-day festival that has taken over Pickaway County streets every October since 1903.

What locals have long treated as an unofficial sneak-peek evening becomes official this year. On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the midway, concessions and amusement rides open at 5 p.m., with an opening ceremony on The Savings Bank Stage at Pumpkin Show Park and live entertainment from Studio One at 5:45 p.m. At 7 p.m., the inaugural Tuesday night parade steps off under the theme “Pumpkin Show Celebrates 250 Years of Agriculture,” tying the festival to the America 250 commemoration with farm equipment from across two and a half centuries, crops, FFA units, marching bands and competition floats.

The main festival runs Wednesday, Oct. 21, through Saturday, Oct. 24, with the midway and exhibits open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday begins with one of the show’s signature moments, the giant pumpkin weigh-in at Court and Main streets, where growers compete for bragging rights with pumpkins that can top a ton. The Little Miss Pumpkin Show Parade follows at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the Miss Pumpkin Show Parade steps off at 8 p.m.

Parades anchor every day of the run, eight in all for the first time. Thursday brings the Baby Parade at 3:30 p.m. and the Bands and Youth Organizations Parade at 8 p.m., featuring the Ohio State University Marching Band. Friday pairs the 3:30 p.m. Pet Parade with the Lodges, Civic and Fraternal Organizations Parade at 8 p.m., and the week closes Saturday night with the Ohio Festival and Events Association Queens Parade.

Preliminary activities begin even earlier: decorated golf cart judging is set for 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, on East Main Street. Organizers have long sold discount ride tickets and wristbands in advance, and Tuesday’s preview includes a ride wristband special during the 5-to-10 p.m. window.

For a city of roughly 12,000 to 14,000 people, the Pumpkin Show is an enormous undertaking — the free festival routinely draws crowds estimated at 100,000 visitors a day and more than 400,000 across the run. Downtown streets close to traffic and fill with rides, booths and food vendors selling the pumpkin-flavored everything the show is famous for, from pumpkin donuts and pies to pumpkin burgers and ice cream. Local bakeries famously sell pumpkin donuts by the tens of thousands during the week.

Visitors are urged to plan for crowds and parking: arrive early, expect downtown detours, and check the official schedule at pumpkinshow.com before heading out, since parade lineups and entertainment times can shift. For Pickaway County families, though, the logistics are part of the ritual — the Pumpkin Show remains Ohio’s oldest festival of its kind, and this year, for the first time, it starts a day early.
