The Ottawa Hills girls soccer team beat Oak Harbor 1-0 on Saturday, Nov. 7, to win the Division V, Region 17 championship and advance to the state semifinals, according to the Akron Beacon Journal’s OHSAA regional final roundup.
The regional crown caps a historic three-game run for the Green Bears. Ottawa Hills won the first district title in program history on Oct. 30, defeating Woodmore 3-1, the Ottawa Hills Local Schools announced — which makes Saturday’s regional championship the first in program history as well.
Between the district and regional titles came one of the tournament’s tightest games. Ottawa Hills topped Archbold 3-2 in overtime in the regional semifinal, BCSN reported, in a match played at Bowling Green High School. The Green Bears had entered that semifinal directly off the Woodmore district final, and the overtime win sent them into Saturday’s final against Oak Harbor.
Oak Harbor arrived as a formidable finalist. The Rockets carried a 19-1-1 record into the regional final scoreboard listings on MaxPreps, while Ottawa Hills stood at 15-3-2 — and the Green Bears still kept the clean sheet, winning the lowest-scoring kind of final there is, 1-0.
The Beacon Journal’s statewide roundup reported the 1-0 final score without a scoring detail, and no official scoring summary for the match had been posted by early Sunday. NewsForce247 is not naming a goal scorer until one is confirmed by the schools or the OHSAA.
What we know — and what we’re still waiting on
What we know: Ottawa Hills is the Division V, Region 17 champion after a 1-0 win over Oak Harbor on Nov. 7, following a 3-2 overtime regional semifinal win over Archbold and a 3-1 district final win over Woodmore — the program’s first district title, per the school district. What we’re still waiting on: the confirmed scoring play from Saturday’s final and the OHSAA’s posted state semifinal site and start time.
Saturday was regional final day for girls soccer teams across Ohio — all girls regional finals were played Nov. 7, with the winners filling out the state final fours across the divisions, the Beacon Journal reported. Elsewhere in northwest Ohio’s fall tournament picture, Hudson’s boys blanked Highland 4-0 to reach a state soccer semifinal, and Wadsworth’s girls volleyball team rallied past Olmsted Falls to reach the state semifinals.
For Ottawa Hills, a school whose boys soccer team won the 2008 state title — the first state soccer championship by a northwest Ohio school, according to the school’s history — the girls program is now writing its own firsts, three tournament wins deep into November.
For Oak Harbor, the loss ends a 19-win season in the regional final — the Rockets entered Saturday at 19-1-1, according to the MaxPreps scoreboard listings, and finish as Region 17 runners-up. For the Ottawa Hills community, the run has been the story of the school’s fall: a first district title, an overtime semifinal win, and now a shutout of a 19-win team with a state semifinal berth on the line.
Timeline of a historic run
Oct. 30: Ottawa Hills beats Woodmore 3-1 to win the first district championship in program history, as announced by Ottawa Hills Local Schools. Nov. 3-4: the Green Bears edge Archbold 3-2 in overtime in the regional semifinal at Bowling Green High School, BCSN reported. Nov. 7: Ottawa Hills shuts out Oak Harbor 1-0 in the Region 17 final to reach the state semifinals, according to the Beacon Journal’s roundup.
The defensive thread runs through all three results. Across the district final, the regional semifinal and the regional final, Ottawa Hills conceded three goals in three games — one to Woodmore, two to Archbold in an overtime game, and none to a 19-win Oak Harbor team in the final. In a 1-0 final, that clean sheet was the championship.
The semifinal also extends a tournament in which Ottawa Hills has now won three straight one- or two-goal games, each round tighter than the last — exactly the profile of a team comfortable playing with its season on the line in the final minutes.
What happens next: Ottawa Hills advances to the Division V state semifinals, where Berlin Hiland awaits after beating Fayetteville-Perry 1-0 in the Region 18 final, according to the Beacon Journal’s roundup. A win there would put the Green Bears in the state championship match — another first for the program.
