The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to a local bank on December 3 after employees discovered a crystal-like substance inside one of the tubes used for transactions. Field tests indicated the material appeared to be methamphetamine.
Investigators later determined the packet had been mistakenly sent through the system by 46-year-old Jason G. Smith during a routine banking visit.
Officers with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources later located Smith in Wayne Township. With the help of K-9 Max, deputies searched his vehicle and reportedly found more suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia. Smith was arrested and booked into the Monroe County Jail.
Sheriff’s officials used the unusual incident as a reminder that illegal substances should never be left in public areas or businesses, emphasizing that they can be safely surrendered.
“Illegal drugs don’t belong in bank drive-throughs – but they can be turned in at the Sheriff’s Office,” the department stated. “No charges, no handcuffs, just help. We’d rather safely remove them from the streets than deal with another unexpected deposit.”
