REEDSVILLE, Ohio — With 9:40 left in its season, Shadyside trailed Reedsville Eastern 26-7. What happened next will be retold in Belmont County for years: Eastern fumbled on three consecutive plays, the Tigers pounced on every one of them, and Shadyside scored 20 unanswered points to stun the Eagles 27-26 on Friday night in a Division VII, Region 27 regional quarterfinal.

The comeback’s outline was captured in real time by SOSA’s highlight coverage from the game, which reported that Shadyside trailed 26-7 with 9:40 to play, that Eastern fumbled on three straight plays, and that the Tigers took full advantage to grab a 27-26 lead with 6:08 remaining. The final score — Shadyside 27, Eastern 26 — was confirmed by the Columbus Dispatch, the Ironton Tribune, the Mansfield News Journal and High School On SI.

The fifth-seeded Tigers (10-2) had spent most of the night chasing the fourth-seeded Eagles on their home field in Meigs County. Eastern (8-3) built its 19-point cushion and appeared to be closing in on a regional semifinal berth before the turnover avalanche buried it in a span of roughly three and a half minutes of game clock.

Playoff comebacks do not get much more sudden. A fumble can be written off as bad luck; three in a row, each converted into points, is a collapse and a rally at the same time. Shadyside still had to finish the drives its defense handed it, and the Tigers did — three times — to flip a 26-7 deficit into a one-point lead they protected over the final six minutes.

The win continues a postseason return to form for Shadyside. A week earlier, the Tigers beat South Gallia 41-6 in their first home playoff game at Fleming Field since 2021, according to the Wheeling Intelligencer’s Nick Henthorn, whose reporting was summarized by Signal News. Friday’s game required none of that comfort — just nerve, on the road, with the season 9 minutes and 40 seconds from ending.

Eastern’s season closes at 8-3 with one of the most painful losses in program history, a 19-point fourth-quarter lead that vanished in three plays. Shadyside, meanwhile, advances to the Division VII, Region 27 semifinals on Friday, Nov. 13 — carrying the kind of momentum that only a comeback like this one can create.
