Maxwell Anatra, the 24-year-old suspect accused of the aggravated murder of his parents, Matthew and Lisa Anatra, in Crestline, Ohio, has had bond set at $1 million following his arraignment in Crawford County Common Pleas Court. Anatra pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him and faces an 11-count indictment, including multiple counts of aggravated murder, burglary, and robbery. Prosecutors have announced they do not intend to seek the death penalty in this case.

The tragic incident unfolded on November 19, 2025, when the bodies of Lisa Anatra, 61, and Matthew Anatra, 63, were discovered in their Crestline home on North Henry Street. Law enforcement was alerted by a concerned co-worker who reported Lisa Anatra’s absence from work and signs of disturbance at the residence. Upon arrival, officers found Lisa dead inside the home and Matthew deceased in the detached garage. Family members reported that Maxwell Anatra had been seen at the house the night before and had since become unreachable. Investigators later learned Maxwell had traveled to Michigan and was attempting to leave the country, traveling towards Canada. He was apprehended by Canadian authorities while attempting to cross the border and returned to Ohio custody.

Maxwell Anatra was indicted by a Crawford County Grand Jury on 11 counts, including two counts of unclassified felony aggravated murder for the fatal stabbing of his parents. Other charges include aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery. During his court appearance, Anatra pleaded not guilty. A visiting judge, retired Franklin County Judge Dan Hogan, set bond at $1 million, citing the severity of the charges and concerns regarding Anatra’s mental health while in custody. Prosecutors emphasized that no firearm was involved in the slayings and noted Anatra’s lack of prior criminal history.

The Crawford County Prosecuting Attorney’s office has decided not to pursue the death penalty in this case after consulting with the victims’ family. The Anatra family, known to be of strong faith, expressed their wish to forgo capital punishment, which prosecutors respected. Instead, Maxwell Anatra faces the possibility of two life sentences plus approximately 50 additional years if convicted on all counts. The prosecutor described the case as unprecedented and deeply difficult for the community and the courthouse staff, especially given Lisa Anatra’s long-term employment within the county courthouse system.
