CANTON — A new mural honoring the people and history of Southeast Canton will be revealed to the public later this month, when the City of Canton holds a dedication and unveiling for the Southeast Canton Neighborhood Mural at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17, beneath the Route 30 underpass on Cherry Avenue Southeast.

The event will take place at 1157 Cherry Avenue SE, and the city is opening it to everyone. According to the City of Canton’s November 3 announcement, all are welcome and no RSVP is required, and the city is inviting residents, neighborhood organizations and community members to join in the celebration.

The mural was created by Canton artist Jasmine Barrino. The City of Canton said in its announcement that the work uses colorful imagery, historic photographs and community-centered themes to honor the people, places and stories that have helped shape Southeast Canton over generations.

City officials described the artwork as a visual tribute to the neighborhood’s identity and resilience, and to the generations of residents who have contributed to its growth and character. In the city’s telling, the mural highlights Southeast Canton’s legacy while also looking toward a bright future for the neighborhood.

The Cherry Avenue site puts that tribute in a place residents pass every day, under the Route 30 underpass in the neighborhood the mural celebrates. The Repository, Canton’s daily newspaper, also reported the November 17 unveiling this week, confirming the time, the Cherry Avenue location beneath the underpass and Barrino’s role as the artist, in its story headlined “Southeast Canton neighborhood mural to make debut on Nov. 17.”

The dedication adds to a run of public art across Canton in recent years. The Stark Community Foundation reported that the inaugural Canton Mural Fest in 2024 brought 13 new murals to the northeast section of downtown, a project backed by ArtsinStark, the City of Canton, the Downtown Canton Partnership and Visit Canton, and The Repository reported in June that a separate mural honoring America’s 250th anniversary and notable figures from Canton’s history was unveiled downtown.

For Southeast Canton, however, this mural is personal rather than citywide: its subject is the neighborhood itself — its photographs, its stories and the residents who built its character over generations, in the words of the City of Canton’s announcement.

What happens next is the unveiling itself. Neighbors who want a first look should plan to be at 1157 Cherry Avenue SE, beneath the Route 30 underpass, at 10 a.m. on November 17, when the city dedicates the mural and welcomes the community that inspired it.
