The Toledo Rockets open their 2026-27 men’s basketball season on Monday night, November 2, with a road trip to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to face Arkansas State in the MAC-SBC Challenge. The University of Toledo athletics department announced the matchup as the first of two challenge games for the Rockets this season, with tip-off set for 8 p.m. Eastern on an ESPN platform, according to the game listings for Monday night.

The MAC-SBC Challenge is a scheduling alliance between the Mid-American Conference and the Sun Belt Conference, now in its fourth season, according to the University of Toledo. All 12 MAC men’s programs visit Sun Belt schools in the opening week, while the MAC women’s programs host their Sun Belt counterparts, and a second round of challenge games follows on Saturday, February 6, 2027, with matchups set in January from real-time NET rankings.

Toledo brings real momentum into the opener. The Rockets finished 19-15 last season and, according to the University of Toledo, registered their sixth consecutive top-four league finish with an 11-7 MAC mark. That run carried them to the MAC Championship game, with quarterfinal and semifinal wins over Bowling Green and UMass along the way.

The Rockets’ top returning scorer is senior center Austin Parks. The University of Toledo reported that Parks averaged a career-high 10.7 points and 5.6 rebounds last season, ranked fourth in the MAC with a team-high 61.7 percent field-goal mark, and ranked sixth in the league with 1.3 blocks per game. How Parks handles Arkansas State’s frontcourt on the road will be one of the first tests of the new season.

Arkansas State will not be a soft opening opponent. The Red Wolves finished 20-12 last season and tied for second in the Sun Belt at 11-7, according to the University of Toledo’s matchup announcement. Playing a 20-win team in its own building, at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro, gives Toledo an immediate measure of where a rebuilt rotation stands.

History, at least, favors the visitors. Toledo has won each of its previous four meetings with Arkansas State, according to the University of Toledo, including a 73-65 home victory on December 13, 2014, in the teams’ last meeting. That history is more than a decade old, however, and neither roster from that game remains, so Monday’s meeting is effectively a fresh start for the series.

What we know — and what we’re still waiting on

What is known is the shape of the night: a season opener on the road, on national streaming, against a Sun Belt team coming off a 20-win season, in a challenge format designed to give mid-major programs meaningful non-conference games. What is not yet known is how Toledo’s rotation settles in a real game, which newcomers earn late-game minutes, and how the Rockets handle a hostile building in their first test.

Northwest Ohio fans have already had a taste of Toledo basketball drama this fall, in a different sport and a familiar rivalry. Readers can revisit our coverage of Bowling Green’s comeback win over Toledo in the Battle of I-75, and the start of another college season in Akron’s rebuilt women’s team opening its season Monday night.

Scheduling help for the challenge comes from Ordinal Sports Group, which weighs NET data, geography and how often programs have met, according to the University of Toledo. That is why a Toledo-Arkansas State pairing that has not happened since 2014 can surface now: the format is built to create fresh, competitive matchups instead of repeating the same non-conference opponents every year.

For Toledo, the value of Monday night goes beyond one win or one loss. A road opener against a strong Sun Belt team counts heavily in the early NET picture that will shape the February challenge pairings and, later, postseason seeding conversations. A competitive showing in Jonesboro would also confirm that last season’s championship-game run was a foundation, not a peak.

What happens next is immediate: after Monday’s opener in Jonesboro, the Rockets turn toward the rest of a November schedule that will bring them home to Savage Arena in Toledo, while their second MAC-SBC Challenge opponent will be announced in January ahead of the February 6 rematch round. Monday night’s 8 p.m. Eastern tip is the first real answer of the season.
