FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Toledo Walleye fell to the Fort Wayne Komets 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, October 31, at Memorial Coliseum, with Nolan Moyle scoring Toledo’s lone goal on a shorthanded, one-handed effort in the second period, according to the Walleye’s official game story.
Toledo came in off an overtime win at Kalamazoo on Friday night and played a scoreless start in Fort Wayne before Mitch Hults opened the scoring for the Komets late in the first period, beating goaltender Carter Gylander with a wrist shot at 16:19, with assists from Cody Morgan and Jonny Tychonick, the Fort Wayne Komets reported in their game recap.
Hults struck again in the second period, scoring on the power play at 13:45 to give Fort Wayne a 2-0 lead, according to the Komets. Toledo answered while shorthanded — a steal by Marcus Crawford led to Moyle’s goal at 16:57, the Walleye’s second shorthanded goal of the season and Moyle’s first goal of the year, the Walleye reported.
The third period brought chances but no equalizer. Toledo took its fourth penalty of the game with 2:15 left to play and still pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker, but could not capitalize before the final horn, according to the Walleye’s game story.
Fort Wayne goaltender Evan Cormier made 28 saves to earn the win in his Komets debut, the Komets reported, as Fort Wayne snapped a three-game winless streak in the Saturday afternoon meeting between the ECHL Central Division rivals.
The split of the weekend road pair — the overtime win at Kalamazoo followed by the one-goal loss at Fort Wayne — leaves Toledo to regroup on the road again before its next home date.
What happens next: the Walleye travel back to Michigan on Wednesday, November 4, to take on the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:00 p.m. ET, according to the team’s game story.
