Friday’s shooting is the second fatal shooting in the Hilltop in less than a month. On Oct. 6, Cedric Cole, 53, died after a shooting on the 2100 block of Clarendon Lane, just south of Sullivant Avenue, according to a Columbus police news release reported by The Columbus Dispatch. Three teenagers — a 15-year-old and two 14-year-olds — have been charged with murder in connection with Cole’s death, and police said a preliminary investigation found an argument between the teenagers and Cole led to that shooting, The Columbus Dispatch reported. Police have not said the two cases are connected, and they involve different blocks and different circumstances as described by investigators.

The Hardesty Place shooting also comes as Columbus continues to act against locations tied to repeated violence, including the court-ordered shutdown this week of a Columbus nightlife bar after shootings, covered in our report on the Aurora bar closure. In a separate law-enforcement story this week, a Franklin County deputy was suspended over misuse of Flock camera data.

For Hilltop residents, the immediate impact is a homicide investigation on a residential street on Halloween weekend, with a neighbor hospitalized in critical condition and no suspect publicly identified. Anyone who was in the area of Hardesty Place West on Friday evening, or who has doorbell or security video from the block, could hold information detectives need.

What happens next: Columbus police homicide detectives continue the investigation, and the victims’ identities are typically released by police or the Franklin County Coroner’s Office once families are notified. Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Columbus police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or provide an anonymous tip to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477, numbers The Columbus Dispatch published for Hilltop homicide cases.
