Toledo needed nearly everything it had on Saturday, outlasting Western Michigan 45-38 at the Glass Bowl to reach bowl eligibility. The Rockets improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in MAC play, while the Broncos fell to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Toledo athletics reported the win also handed a second straight opponent its first MAC loss.

The Rockets started fast, leading 14-0 after the first quarter and building that advantage to 31-14 by halftime. At that point Toledo appeared in control at home. Western Michigan, however, refused to let the Glass Bowl crowd settle in, and the second half turned a comfortable lead into a fight to the final minutes.

Western Michigan rallied after halftime, pulling within 38-35 after the third quarter and then tying the game in the fourth quarter. The comeback erased a 17-point halftime deficit and put Toledo in danger of losing a game it had dominated early. Toledo retook the lead in the fourth, setting up a closing stretch decided by its defense.

Quarterback John Alan Richter gave the Rockets the passing performance they needed in a shootout. Richter completed 29 of 41 passes for 391 yards and three touchdowns. Adjatay Dabbs caught eight passes for 124 yards, and Bryson Hammer added seven catches for 107 yards, helping Toledo finish with 595 total yards of offense.

On the ground, CJ Miller carried the load. Miller rushed for 183 yards on 33 carries and scored a touchdown, doing so behind an offensive line that featured just one opening-day starter. Autavius Ison also added a rushing touchdown. Miller’s workload gave Toledo balance on a day when it needed to answer Western Michigan score for score.

The defense delivered the final plays. After Toledo retook the lead, the Rockets forced a three-and-out and then intercepted a pass in the final minutes to seal the win. Israel Petite recorded the game-sealing interception. Nicholas Thompson finished with a career-high nine tackles and the first interception of his career, part of a defensive effort that held on with the game on the line.

The afternoon also marked a personal milestone on the Toledo sideline. The victory was head coach Mike Jacobs’ 100th career win, reached in 125 games. Toledo athletics noted that made Jacobs the 17th-fastest coach across NCAA divisions to reach that mark, adding a historic note to a memorable Glass Bowl game.

For Toledo, the significance goes beyond one wild Saturday. At 6-2, the Rockets are bowl eligible, and at 3-1 in the MAC they have now beaten a second straight opponent that had been unbeaten in conference play. Surviving a tied fourth quarter after leading by 17 at halftime is the kind of win that can define a season — and Toledo found a way to finish it.
