A Mifflin Middle School student is in stable condition after being hit by a car on the morning of Friday, October 23, in Columbus, a Columbus City Schools spokesperson said. The student was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital after the crash at Stelzer Road and Town Center Boulevard, on the city’s northeast side near the school.

The spokesperson said the student was badly bruised but is expected to fully recover. No other details about the student’s condition were released, and the district did not release the student’s name or age. The account shared Friday came from the school district, which is the official source for information about its students.

Mifflin Middle School is part of Columbus City Schools, the state’s largest school district, and serves students in the Northland area. The crash happened during the morning hours, when students are traveling to school on foot, by bus and by car along busy corridors such as Stelzer Road.

The district said a care team would be at Mifflin Middle School on Friday to support students and staff. Care teams include counselors and social workers, and Columbus City Schools dispatches them to schools after student deaths, crashes involving students and other traumatic events, the spokesperson said.

For classmates, a care team on site means trained adults are available during the school day for students who witnessed the crash, heard about it from friends, or simply feel unsettled. The district uses the teams to keep support inside the building rather than leaving families to find it on their own after a frightening morning.

Officials did not release information Friday morning about the driver or about how the crash happened, and no account of fault was provided in the district’s statement. Families with questions about the student’s condition or about support services were directed through the school and the district.

The district’s message for Friday was focused on the student’s recovery. The student is in stable condition at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, is badly bruised, and is expected to fully recover, according to the spokesperson — the outcome school staff and families were hoping to hear as the school day went on.
