NELSONVILLE — Cryptid believers and the merely curious filled the streets of Nelsonville over the weekend as the Athens County town hosted its first-ever Bigfoot Festival, a celebration of the region’s most famous legend.
Organizers put together a day of sasquatch-themed vendors, food trucks and live music, drawing locals and out-of-town visitors eager to learn more about Bigfoot and other cryptid creatures said to roam the Appalachian foothills of southeast Ohio.
Southeast Ohio has long been a hotbed of Bigfoot lore, with reported sightings across the region’s state parks and forests stretching back decades. Festival-goers swapped stories, browsed Bigfoot-themed art and merchandise, and heard from researchers and enthusiasts who track the legend.
Vendors lined the festival grounds while musicians played through the afternoon, giving the weekend gathering the feel of a small-town street fair with a cryptid twist. Children posed for photos with Bigfoot cutouts while adults compared notes on the region’s best-known sighting spots.
With a strong first-year turnout, the festival is poised to become an annual tradition, adding Nelsonville to the map of Ohio towns that have built celebrations around their local legends.
